Square Neck Stretch Dress & Side Split
Pattern Making Tutorial

To celebrate the launch of our basic stretch dress block, we’ve just launched our first pattern making tutorial in a quite a long time! This time we had the pleasure of teaming up with Ayuk 2020 (Tanja). She’s a fabulous pattern maker who I’ve had the pleasure of working with on numerous occasions.

We asked her to come up with a bodycon style that would make full use of our latest made-to-measure basic block, the stretch dress! She added a gorgeous square neckline, side split and a playful pleated cap sleeve. This post demonstrates the first part of that tutorial, adding the square neck and side split. We’ll be releasing the cap sleeve tutorial shortly, but in the meantime, feel free to get to grips with this free pattern making tutorial.

If you want to find out more about Tanja and Ayuk 2020 then please visit her PatternLab profile page. There you will find links to all of her social channels. Enjoy!

You’ll need a digital basic torso block with waist shaping and sleeve to follow this tutorial. Check below the video to see your download options. Enjoy!

Crossover Collar Pattern Making Tutorial

Crossover Collar Pattern Making Tutorial

Crossover Collar Neckline

The crossover neck looks tricky to pattern cut but is essentially quite a simple adaptation. It uses the side neck dart as a pleat to create complex-looking collar structure. This is one of our favourite necklines and works beautifully with the two-piece dress style. Changing the collar height and crossover neck depth creates a range of different design variations. The crossover neck can be used functionally as a front opening for a top or can be stitched closed into a skirt waistband to be used as a design detail.

Basic Block/ Sloper Elements

You will need a basic block that has a “Double” front dart to follow this tutorial and draft this neckline.

To save time, click the button below. We’ll create a basic block (in the Lab) that already has this dart preselected for you. All you’ll need to do is select a profile or one of our standard sizes. Don’t forget to purchase your block as an ePattern and not a PDF! PDF patterns can’t be edited, they can only be printed on paper. ePatterns ar fully editable digital basic blocks.

Tutorial overview

1. Selecting, designing and drafting the correct blocks used to create the crossover collar neck pattern.

2. Opening the purchased ePattern basic blocks in Adobe Illustrator and pasting onto the cutting table ready for pattern making.

3. Measuring the back neck curve, creating the collar template and slash/spreading the top edge of the collar to create shaping.

4. Rotating and aligning the collar to the neckline on the front block.

5. Marking points on the front block to create the crossover width/height and finally drawing in the new front neckline shape.

6. Marking depth of pleat-opening on the upper front dart.

7. Rotating closed lower front dart to increase size of pleat/upper front dart.

8. Creating a facing for the collar and front bodice block.

9. Adding notches to your block in order to match up pattern pieces.

Neckline Facing Pattern Making Tutorial

Neckline Facing Pattern Making Tutorial

Neckline Facing Pattern Making Tutorial

Creating a custom neckline is great, but how do we get rid of the raw edges around the neck and armhole, once we’ve made the garment? It’s simple, we add a neckline facing to the inside of our garment. Neckline facings are usually cut from the same fabric as the rest of the garment. The neckline facing pattern is created by tracing parts of the existing basic block. This creates a brand new set of pattern pieces, that match the existing block. Check out our neckline facing pattern making tutorial and learn how to create a neckline facing for your custom neckline.

Basic Block/ Sloper Elements

You do not need to draft any specific basic block to follow this tutorial. This technique of adding a facing can be applied to pretty much any neckline. Why not have a go with some of your existing basic blocks or custom necklines? If you haven’t already adapted your digital basic block to feature a custom neckline, why not watch one of our neckline tutorials?
